Downtown spot shows plenty of promise

I'm excited any time a new restaurant opens in my neighborhood, so I couldn't wait to check out Over/Under Bar & Grill. It's only been open a little more than a week, so I'll forgive some weaknesses, because the place shows lots of potential.

It was a beautiful day, so we ate on the patio, a quaint space bounded by bushes and mostly hidden from bustling Washington Avenue.

The interior is beautiful, rehabbed similarly to other downtown eateries -- modern design blended with the rawness of the city. And there are lots of TVs, including two in each booth. Sports fans, rejoice.

From the "small plates" (appetizer) menu, we selected the mac and cheese ($6), topped with breadcrumbs, and were underwhelmed. We were expecting something casserole-like with a lot of cheese and cheese flavor.

I had the Over/Under burger, which was delicious. The meat was deliciously seasoned and reminded me a little of meatloaf.

The house fries are seasoned waffle-cut fries -- my favorite.

My friend ordered the chicken BLT, which seems to be a misnomer. It's a large piece of chicken with two pieces of bacon. My friend's arrived sans the L and T. I'd consider it a chicken club -- not a BLT.

Prices are on the high end but still are affordable. We'll definitely be back, especially for happy hour (Monday-Friday, 3-6:30 p.m.).
