First screen role was in the 1956 Western Frontier Woman at 18 months old. Stage debut (at age 2) was in a Baltimore production of  The Seven-Year Itch, which was directed by his father. Was a high school classmate of Rene Russo. At his 1975 wedding to high school sweetheart Cheryl Alley, the ushers were Happy Days costars Donnie Most, Anson Williams and Tom Bosley.
