Amelia

From the time she first sits in the pilot's seat, aviatrix Amelia Earhart (Hilary Swank) feels destined to achieve great things. Beginning in 1928, she sets a number of aviation milestones, including numerous speed and altitude records, and was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. In 1937, Amelia undertakes her greatest challenge of all: to become the first woman to circumnavigate the globe by airplane.

Amelia

It’s difficult to maintain an audience’s interest when they come into the theater knowing the ending of the movie. However, a star-studded cast led by Hilary Swank as Amelia Earhart and Richard Gere as her handsome husband George Putnam almost guarantees that this movie will become a moneymaker.

Unfortunately, there’s always the possibility of a problem when we use the word “almost”. We leave the theater knowing no more about Amelia’s life than when we first entered. What's the reason that she wants to look fear in the face? What in her past makes her stay with George in a loveless marriage? There are many whys in this movie but few answers. We never learn anything about her other than she wants to fly.

It’s difficult to distinguish between Gere’s personas in “Chicago” and his portrayal of Amelia’s husband. He exudes the same slick; fast talking mannerisms in both movies and displays the same talent for conning people. Hillary Swank, pared down to a no nonsense looking, all American woman is perfectly cast as the fearless Midwesterner she portrays right down to the horsy smile that she constantly flashes. However, the good news stops there. Very little emotion flows from any of the actors. It’s as if all their energies are being used to recreate perfect physical clones of the people they are depicting. Even the love scenes between Gene Vidal, played by Ewan McGregor, and Amelia are lacking in sexual tension and passion.

The flying scenes that should have been riveting instead feel like they were filmed inside a flight stimulator. Even the scenery has the look of a touched up travelogue. Nothing ever happens as we are taken from one locale to another.

Award wining Director Mira Nair doesn’t seem to be able to get into the soul of her characters as she did in Monsoon Wedding, Mississippi Marsala, Salaam Bombay and The Namesake. The pacing of the movie was slow and monotonous.

By the time Amelia disappeared we no longer cared.
