July 31, 2009 - STLtoday.com - By Joe Williams, Post-Dispatch film critic

To title a movie "Funny People" is to invite hecklers. But this risky flick succeeds on several levels because it's loaded with different kinds of funny — and different kinds of people. Although Adam Sandler plays a crude superstar who might be construed as his alter-ego, he has surrendered creative control to smart writer/director Judd Apatow ("Knocked Up") and surrounded himself with actors who are more than just foils for his insults. The collaborative effort is overlong and wrongheaded in some of its sympathies, but it's one of the shrewdest show-business comedies in years.
