Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner), a 78-year-old balloon salesman, is about to fulfill a lifelong dream. Tying thousands of balloons to his house, he flies away to the South American wilderness. But curmudgeonly Carl's worst nightmare comes true when he discovers a little boy named Russell is a stowaway aboard the balloon-powered house.

Pixar, like its corporate cousin Apple, is such a respected innovator that every new release is subjected to unparalleled scrutiny. Each of the animation studio's first nine features, from "Toy Story" to "WALL-E," have been box-office successes, and some are among the most beloved films of all time. Yet it's inevitable that the streak will be broken. Because of holes in the script and some puzzling shifts in the tone, "Up" may pull down Pixar's batting average, but its emotional core and soaring images hit the upper deck.
